Whether you’re on the fence about getting dental implants, or you’ve already made the decision to go for the restorations, you’ll likely hear words that will be new to you at your consultation. Relax – it’s nothing too difficult! But if you would like to brush up on this new set of terminology in advance of your appointment, learn more here about what you might hear.

Dental Implant

A dental implant is a small titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone. It acts as a replacement for the root of a missing tooth and provides a sturdy foundation for a crown, bridge, or denture by integrating with the jaw through a process called osseointegration.

Osseointegration

Osseointegration is the biological process by which the implant fuses with the surrounding jawbone. This healing process typically takes 3 to 6 months and is crucial for the long-term success of the implant. A strong bond ensures that the implant can handle normal chewing and biting forces.

Crown

The crown is the visible part of the tooth that sits above the gumline. In dental implants, the crown is custom designed to match the shape, size, and color of your natural teeth. It is securely placed onto the abutment once the implant has fully healed.

Abutment

The abutment is a connector piece that is attached to the top of the implant after healing. It serves as the link between the implant and the artificial tooth (crown). Abutments can be made of metal, ceramic, or zirconia, and are custom-made to fit your restoration perfectly.

Bone Graft

If your jawbone isn’t thick or dense enough to support an implant, your dentist may recommend a bone graft. This involves placing additional bone (natural or synthetic) into the area to build up the bone and create a stable foundation for the implant.

Sinus Lift

A sinus lift is a surgical procedure sometimes required when placing implants in the upper back jaw. If the sinus cavity is too close to the jaw or the bone is too thin, this procedure lifts the sinus membrane and adds bone to allow safe implant placement.

Denture Implants

If several teeth in a row or complete arches are missing, traditional dentures can be installed the same way dental plants are for a safer and more secure fit and foundation than the old-school appliances. Implants are surgically placed into the jaw, and dentures are fitted on top of them to round out the aesthetics and functionality of teeth.

It can help you feel more confident going into your consultation armed with a little knowledge in your back pocket. So, brush up on this guide in the first step on your journey to a restored smile and better oral health!
